A mouthguard is perhaps the most important and necessary piece of protective equipment in martial arts because an injury to the jaw or teeth can happen very easily. Such an injury can result in easily knocked out teeth or in a lot of pain, leaving you with high dentistry costs. However, such injuries can be avoided very simply, easily, and inexpensively by wearing a mouthguard.

* SHAPE & MATERIAL - The QUANTUM MX1 mouthguard is made of a very flexible material and the shape is very spacious, which allows enough material for precise fitting of every smallest angle of the teeth. It has an ergonomic shape that very precisely reflects the anatomy of the jaw and can therefore be perfectly molded to the teeth. The central tooth groove is extra narrow in the front area for, which exactly reflects the shape of the thin front and sharp incisors. At the back, in the area of the molars, it is significantly wider, which corresponds to our jaw anatomy. The base between the upper and lower jaw is also extra thick. This means that when fitting, if you bite firmly into the mouthguard, there is still enough material for the teeth of the upper and lower jaw to clearly "bite" into the mouthguard. A deep imprint is necessary so that the teeth sit stably in the mouthguard and the halves of the jaw do not slip sideways when hit. The lateral slipping of the lower jaw is often the reason for dangerous injuries to the muscles and ligaments of the teeth. The shape of this mouthguard is thick enough on the outside that you can press part of the flexible material when fitting the mouthguard (with your fingers) onto the upper jaw and upwards even over the gums and downwards onto the teeth of the lower jaw to get more protection. The more area covered by the mouthguard, the less you feel the power of a punch once it lands. The flexible material is also thick enough on the inside to be able to press it firmly against the teeth and sometimes even against the gums when fitting. Pressing the material so precisely against the jaw is very important because this is the only way for the mouthguard to fit well and not fall out when the mouth is opened. The more contact surface the mouthguard has with the teeth, gums and sometimes even the palate and the closer and more precisely it fits, the safer it is.

* FITTING A MOUTHGUARD - A newly purchased mouthguard has only a roughly pre-formed and pre-bent shape with an outline for the teeth of the upper jaw. It is not yet finished and ready for use. Almost every mouthguard must first be warmed up in very warm water and made adaptable. By warming it up in hot water, the mouth guard becomes soft and flexible and can be individually fitted to each jaw and adjusted to the shape of your own teeth by pressing with your fingers. Although almost every mouthguard has precise instructions on how to adjust it, it usually takes several attempts before you can adjust a mouthguard reasonably well. It is therefore advisable for anyone who has never done this before to first find out from reliable sources and videos how to fit a mouthguard, which important steps to take and which potential mistakes to avoid. Luckily, a mouthguard can usually be adjusted a number of times before it either fits well or is so deformed that it is no longer usable. However, advice from a trusted dealer or an experienced fighter or trainer (who has a lot of experience fitting mouthguards) is the best way to avoid making often simple mistakes.

* ADJUSTING THE QUANTUM MX1 MOUTHGUARD - The Quantum MX1 Mouthguard, like any other mouthguard, must first be fitted to your teeth before it can be worn. You should proceed as follows and follow these steps:

1. It is best to bring the water to a boil in a kettle and then pour it into a small container that the mouthguard fits in (e.g. a bowl). Then you should wait about 3-5 minutes until the water temperature drops to about 80-90°. Then you should put the mouthguard in the hot water for about 60-90 seconds.

Note: If the mouthguard bent and deformed significantly in the hot water, then it was in the water too long or the water was too hot. The mouthguard then becomes more difficult to adjust because it becomes too flexible and too unstable. However, if after removing it from the hot water it is so hard that it cannot be adjusted to the denture with pressure, then it was in the hot water too briefly or the water was too cold.

2. While the mouthguard is in the hot water, you could rinse your mouth with warm to hot water to prepare your teeth for the heat of the mouthguard. The teeth are very sensitive to heat and without this procedure, the approx. 80-90° high mouthguard temperature when fitting can be felt as a painful and uncomfortable temperature shock for the teeth. You also have to keep in mind that the temperature of the mouthguards is often so high that you often have to accept slight burns to your gums.

Note: Many manufacturers' instructions for fitting mouthguards state that you should cool the mouthguard under cold water immediately after removing it from the hot water so as not to burn your gums. Although this notice relieves the manufacturers of responsibility and they cannot be accused of burning their mouths, the mouthguard very often becomes too cold and too hard and cannot be easily pressed and adapted to the teeth. As a result, the protection and grip are significantly worse.

3. Immediately after removing the mouthguard from the hot water, you should put it on the upper jaw and bite down lightly so that the teeth of the upper and lower jaw are pressed into the material. Then you should suck up the remaining water from the mouthguard and try to press and shape the mouthguard tightly against the teeth with your fingers from the outside plus your thumb and tongue from the inside. The MX1 mouthguard is perfectly adaptable, not only because it has an optimal shape but also because it is quite thick and bulky. This allows you to press the mouthguard down with your fingers from the outside when fitting, so that part of the material also protects the teeth of the lower jaw well. There is also enough material on the inside so that the mouthguard can be pressed a little higher on the gums and even on the palate. The more contact surface the mouthguard has, the better the hold and protection.

4. Immediately after fitting, the mouthguard should be placed in a container of cold water and allowed to cool for a few minutes. After that it is ready for use.

5. If the mouthguard does not fit well after this procedure, you can usually repeat points 1 - 4 one or two more times before the mouthguard is too deformed to guarantee good protection.

* CARE - The mouth guard should be washed under running water after each training session and set aside to dry. After drying, it should always be stored in a designated box. It should never be exposed to direct sunlight because the sun could deform the mouthguard and damage the material. You should clean your mouthguard with a toothbrush and some toothpaste about every 10 training sessions. After about 100 training sessions you should throw away the mouthguard and buy a new one. The reason for this is that after so many uses, the mouth guard is usually a bit deformed and/or bitten through. If the mouthguard is dirty, the it implies that bacteria have collected on the mouthguard. Therefore, it is always safer and healthier to change your mouthguard more often.

Ein Mundschutz ist vielleicht das wichtigste und notwendigste Stück Schutzausrüstung im Kampfsport, denn eine Verletzung des Kiefers oder der Zähne kann sehr leicht passieren. Eine solche Verletzung kann leicht zu ausgeschlagenen Zähnen oder starken Schmerzen führen und hohe Zahnarztkosten nach sich ziehen. Solche Verletzungen können jedoch sehr einfach, leicht und kostengünstig durch das Tragen eines Mundschutzes vermieden werden.

 * FORM & MATERIAL - Der QUANTUM MX1 Mundschutz ist aus einem sehr flexiblen Material gefertigt und die Form ist sehr geräumig, was genügend Material für eine präzise Anpassung an jeden kleinsten Winkel der Zähne ermöglicht. Er hat eine ergonomische Form, die sehr genau die Anatomie des Kiefers widerspiegelt und sich daher perfekt an die Zähne anpassen lässt. Die zentrale Zahnfurche ist im vorderen Bereich extra schmal, was die Form der dünnen vorderen und spitzen Schneidezähne genau widerspiegelt. Hinten, im Bereich der Backenzähne, ist sie deutlich breiter, was unserer Kieferanatomie entspricht. Auch die Basis zwischen Ober- und Unterkiefer ist besonders dick. Das bedeutet, dass beim Anpassen, wenn man fest auf den Mundschutz beißt, noch genügend Material vorhanden ist, damit die Zähne des Ober- und Unterkiefers deutlich in den Mundschutz "beißen". Ein tiefer Abdruck ist notwendig, damit die Zähne stabil im Mundschutz sitzen und die Kieferhälften bei Schlägen nicht seitlich verrutschen. Das seitliche Abrutschen des Unterkiefers ist oft der Grund für gefährliche Verletzungen der Muskeln und Bänder an den Zähnen. Die Form dieses Mundschutzes ist an der Außenseite so dick, dass Sie einen Teil des flexiblen Materials beim Anlegen des Mundschutzes (mit den Fingern) auf den Oberkiefer und nach oben sogar über das Zahnfleisch und nach unten auf die Zähne des Unterkiefers drücken können, um mehr Schutz zu erhalten. Je mehr Fläche der Mundschutz abdeckt, desto weniger spüren Sie die Kraft eines Schlags, wenn er auf Sie trifft. Das flexible Material ist auch auf der Innenseite dick genug, um es beim Anpassen fest an die Zähne und manchmal sogar an das Zahnfleisch drücken zu können. Das genaue Anpressen des Materials an den Kiefer ist sehr wichtig, denn nur so kann der Mundschutz gut sitzen und fällt nicht heraus, wenn der Mund geöffnet wird. Je mehr Kontaktfläche der Mundschutz mit den Zähnen, dem Zahnfleisch und manchmal sogar dem Gaumen hat und je enger und genauer er sitzt, desto sicherer ist er.

* ANPASSEN EINES MUNDSCHUTZES - Ein neu gekaufter Mundschutz hat nur eine grob vorgeformte und vorgebogene Form mit einer Kontur für die Zähne des Oberkiefers. Er ist noch nicht fertig und einsatzbereit. Fast jeder Mundschutz muss erst in sehr warmem Wasser aufgewärmt und anpassungsfähig gemacht werden. Durch das Erwärmen in heißem Wasser wird der Mundschutz weich und flexibel und kann durch Druck mit den Fingern individuell an jeden Kiefer und an die eigene Zahnform angepasst werden. Obwohl fast jedem Mundschutz eine genaue Anleitung zur Anpassung beiliegt, braucht es meist mehrere Versuche, bis man einen Mundschutz einigermaßen gut einstellen kann. Wer das noch nie gemacht hat, sollte sich daher zunächst in zuverlässigen Quellen und Videos informieren, wie man einen Mundschutz anpasst, welche wichtigen Schritte zu beachten sind und welche möglichen Fehler man vermeiden sollte. Glücklicherweise kann ein Mundschutz in der Regel mehrmals angepasst werden, bevor er entweder gut sitzt oder so verformt ist, dass er nicht mehr zu gebrauchen ist. Die Beratung durch einen Händler des Vertrauens oder einen erfahrenen Boxer oder Trainer (der viel Erfahrung mit der Anpassung von Mundschutz hat) ist jedoch der beste Weg, um oft einfache Fehler zu vermeiden.

* ANPASSEN DES QUANTUM MX1-MUNDSCHUTZES - Der Quantum MX1-Mundschutz muss, wie jeder andere Mundschutz auch, zunächst an Ihre Zähne angepasst werden, bevor er getragen werden kann. Gehen Sie dazu wie folgt vor und befolgen Sie diese Schritte:

1. Am besten bringen Sie das Wasser in einem Wasserkocher zum Kochen und gießen es dann in ein kleines Gefäß, in das der Mundschutz passt (z. B. eine Schüssel). Dann sollten Sie etwa 3-5 Minuten warten, bis die Wassertemperatur auf etwa 80-90° gesunken ist. Dann legen Sie den Mundschutz für etwa 60-90 Sekunden in das heiße Wasser.

Hinweis: Wenn sich der Mundschutz im heißen Wasser stark verbogen und verformt hat, dann war er zu lange im Wasser oder das Wasser war zu heiß. Der Mundschutz lässt sich dann schwerer anpassen, weil er zu flexibel und zu instabil wird. Wenn er jedoch nach dem Herausnehmen aus dem heißen Wasser so hart ist, dass er sich nicht mit Druck an die Prothese anpassen lässt, war er zu kurz im heißen Wasser oder das Wasser war zu kalt.

2. Während der Mundschutz im heißen Wasser liegt, können Sie Ihren Mund mit warmem bis heißem Wasser ausspülen, um Ihre Zähne auf die Hitze des Mundschutzes vorzubereiten. Die Zähne sind sehr hitzeempfindlich und ohne diese Prozedur kann die ca. 80-90° hohe Mundschutztemperatur beim Anlegen als schmerzhafter und unangenehmer Temperaturschock für die Zähne empfunden werden. Man muss auch bedenken, dass die Temperatur des Mundschutzes oft so hoch ist, dass man leichte Verbrennungen des Zahnfleisches in Kauf nehmen muss.

Hinweis: In den Anleitungen vieler Hersteller zum Anpassen des Mundschutzes wird darauf hingewiesen, dass Sie den Mundschutz sofort nach dem Herausnehmen aus dem heißen Wasser unter kaltem Wasser abkühlen sollten, um sich nicht das Zahnfleisch zu verbrennen. Obwohl dieser Hinweis die Hersteller von der Verantwortung entbindet und ihnen nicht vorgeworfen werden kann, sich den Mund zu verbrennen, wird der Mundschutz sehr oft zu kalt und zu hart und lässt sich nicht mehr leicht an die Zähne drücken und anpassen. Infolgedessen sind der Schutz und der Halt deutlich schlechter.

3. Unmittelbar nachdem Sie den Mundschutz aus dem heißen Wasser genommen haben, sollten Sie ihn auf den Oberkiefer legen und leicht darauf beißen, so dass die Zähne des Ober- und Unterkiefers in das Material gedrückt werden. Dann sollten Sie das restliche Wasser aus dem Mundschutz aufsaugen und versuchen, den Mundschutz mit den Fingern von außen und mit Daumen und Zunge von innen fest an die Zähne zu drücken und zu formen. Der MX1-Mundschutz ist perfekt anpassungsfähig, nicht nur weil er eine optimale Form hat, sondern auch weil er recht dick und voluminös ist. So kann man den Mundschutz beim Anpassen mit den Fingern von außen nach unten drücken, so dass ein Teil des Materials auch die Zähne des Unterkiefers gut schützt. Auch auf der Innenseite ist genügend Material vorhanden, so dass der Mundschutz etwas höher auf das Zahnfleisch und sogar auf den Gaumen gedrückt werden kann. Je mehr Auflagefläche der Mundschutz hat, desto besser ist der Halt und Schutz.

4. Unmittelbar nach dem Anpassen sollte der Mundschutz in ein Gefäß mit kaltem Wasser gelegt werden.  Danach ist er einsatzbereit.

5. Wenn der Mundschutz nach dieser Prozedur nicht gut sitzt, können Sie die Punkte 1 - 4 in der Regel noch ein oder zwei Mal wiederholen, bevor der Mundschutz zu stark verformt ist, um einen guten Schutz zu gewährleisten.

* PFLEGE - Der Mundschutz sollte nach jedem Training unter fließendem Wasser gewaschen und zum Trocknen beiseite gelegt werden. Nach dem Trocknen sollte er immer in einer dafür vorgesehenen Box aufbewahrt werden. Er sollte nie direktem Sonnenlicht ausgesetzt werden, da die Sonne den Mundschutz verformen und das Material beschädigen könnte. Sie sollten Ihren Mundschutz etwa alle 10 Trainingseinheiten mit einer Zahnbürste und etwas Zahnpasta reinigen. Nach etwa 100 Trainingseinheiten sollten Sie den Mundschutz wegwerfen und einen neuen kaufen. Der Grund dafür ist, dass der Mundschutz nach so vielen Einsätzen meist etwas verformt und/oder durchgebissen ist. Wenn der Mundschutz schmutzig ist, bedeutet das, dass sich Bakterien auf dem Mundschutz angesammelt haben. Daher ist es immer sicherer und gesünder, den Mundschutz öfter zu wechseln.
